What is Professional Teeth Whitening?
Over time, our teeth can stain and turn yellow and become discoloured from the foods we eat, habits like smoking, and poor dental hygiene. This has made teeth whitening an increasingly popular treatment at our dental office in Markham.
Professional teeth whitening is a safe and effective way of improving the colour of your smile. The process is simple and minimally invasive.
At Markham 7 Dental, we offer take-home teeth whitening. This allows you to whiten your teeth on your own time, so you look your best before a big event, date night, or any other special occasion!
What are the Benefits of Teeth Whitening?
A brighter smile can give your confidence a real boost. Plus, many of our patients find that having whiter teeth makes them feel more inclined to keep up with their oral hygiene so that they can maintain their results for longer.
How Teeth Whitening Works
Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel designed to penetrate the tooth's enamel and break down stain molecules, leaving you with a bright, white smile. While strong, this peroxide gel is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and very safe when used as directed.
Personalized Take-Home Teeth Whitening
You can achieve a brighter smile from the comfort of your home by following our take-home whitening process. We'll start by taking impressions of your mouth to create custom whitening trays that fit you perfectly. We'll send these home with you, along with whitening gel and instructions for use.
When it's time to whiten your teeth, you will apply the provided whitening gel to the trays and wear them according to the directions for use. Once the time is up, simply take the trays out of your mouth and smile with confidence!
Teeth Whitening FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening at Markham 7 Dental.
-
How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?
Teeth whitening isn’t permanent. Drinks like coffee and wine, as well as foods with strong pigments, like turmeric, can stain your teeth over time. How long your results last depends on your diet and habits. With good oral hygiene, you might only need a touch-up about once a year.
-
Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?
Dental insurance does not typically cover the cost of teeth whitening.
-
Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?
One short-term side effect of teeth whitening may be increased sensitivity. For most patients, this fades away within a few days following a whitening session. To minimize discomfort, we recommend that you use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before treatment and for at least two weeks afterward.
-
Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?
Teeth whitening usually works best on yellow or brown stains. However, some types of stains don’t respond well to whitening. If a brighter smile is important to you and whitening isn’t effective, your dentist might suggest other cosmetic options, like crowns or veneers, that could better suit your needs.
-
Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening only works on natural teeth and will not work on existing dental restorations such as fillings, crowns, or veneers. If restorations are part of your treatment plan, teeth whitening should take place before you receive them so that they can be colour matched to the new, whiter shade.
-
Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?
When used correctly and under a dentist’s supervision, teeth whitening is very unlikely to harm your enamel. It’s always a good idea to check with your dentist before starting any whitening products. And if you feel any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort during or after treatment, be sure to let your dentist know right away.
